6. Who to pray for?
Apart from praying for ourselves, who else do we pray for? In this section, we will explore those who would need our prayers. This is by no means exhaustive, there could be more.
For the Holy Spirit.
Luke 11:13 - 13If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
For the Children
Matthew 19:13 - 13Then little children were brought to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked those who brought them.
For fellow believers
- to grow in grace and knowledge of God.
Colossians 1:9-10 - 9For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. 10And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God,
- Not to fall into temptation
Luke 22:40 - 40On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.”
Luke 22:46 - 46“Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”
- For deliverance
2 Thessalonians 3:2 -2and that we will be rescued from perverse and evil men; for not all have faith.
- To be alert against the enemy
1 Peter 5:8 - Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.
- For Family Salvation
Acts 16:31-33 – 31They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.” 32Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. 33At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his family were baptized.
For others and especially those in authority.
1 Timothy 2:1-3 - 1First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, 2for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. 3This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior,
For the workers in the Lord’s field.
Matthew 9:38 -38“Therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.”
For the expansion of God’s kingdom
2 Thessalonians 3:1 - 1Finally, brethren, pray for us that the word of the Lord will spread rapidly and be glorified, just as it did also with you;
Colossians 4:3: And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains.
Pray for your enemies and persecutors.
Matthew 5:44 - 44But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
Pray for those who need prayer (Prayer Request): In times of need, even the Christians of old asked for the others to pray for them
1 Thessalonians 5:25 – Brothers, pray for us.
Hebrews 13:18 – Pray for us. We are sure that we have a clear conscience and desire to live honorably in every way.
