5. What to cover in prayer?
So what do we cover in prayer? The 5 fingers of prayer attempts to help us remember what the key items we need to or can pray for. Please take time to go through the following to understand how it is structure and adapt to your prayer style. It actually ties in quite well with the previous ACTS acronym. It will be the “S” of ACTS.
1. THUMB: Your thumb is nearest to you.
Begin your prayers by praying for those closest to you.
So pray for those nearest you such as your spouse, children, siblings, family , friends and co-workers. It could be to receive Christ or problems they are facing currently.
Philippians 4:6 – 6Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
Act 16: 31, 32 -31They said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.” 32And they spoke the word of the Lord to him together with all who were in his house.
2. POINTING FINGER: The next finger is the pointing finger.
Next pray for those who teach, instruct and heal.
So pray for those who heal, pastors and Church leadership such as teachers, health care professionals, and church workers. We need to continuously uphold them in prayer as Satan is very keen to bring them down so that it will impact the Church, the body of Christ.
1 Peter 5:8 - Be of sober spirit, be on the alert your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
1 Thessalonians 1:2 – 2We always thank God for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers. 3We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.
3. TALLEST FINGER: The next finger is the tallest finger.
It reminds us of our leaders.
So pray for the leaders in government (local and state), business, police and fire departments, and military personnel
1 Timothy 2:1-3 – 1First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, 2for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. 3This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior,
4. RING FINGER: The fourth finger is our ring finger.
Surprising to many is the fact that this is our weakest finger.
So pray for healing, those who are sick and in need, locally, nationally and internationally including the persecuted church and those who have suffered natural and man-made disasters.
Matthew 10:8 – “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. Freely you received, freely give.
5. LITTLE FINGER: And lastly comes our little finger; the smallest finger of all.
This is where we should place ourselves in relation to God and others.
So pray for your needs, eg career / health / God’s chosen partner (if not married)
Matthew 7:7 - 7“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
Here are some aspects not found in the 5 fingers that you could consider praying for as well.
OTHER ASPECTS OF INTERCESSORY PRAYER. Here is a sample list of things we should pray for.
For forgiveness and cleansing from sin.
Psalm 25:16-18 – 16 Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted. 17 The troubles of my heart have multiplied; free me from my anguish. 18 Look upon my affliction and my distress and take away all my sins.
For faith and wisdom.
Luke 17:5 - 5The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!”
James 1:5 - 5If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.
For the insight and understanding of Yahweh’s law.
Psalm 119:18 – 18 Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.
For healing (approach the elders as instructed).
James 5:14-15 – 14Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.
For day to day provisions.
Matthew 6:11 – 11Give us today our daily bread.
Please take some time to meditate on the verses and as you meditate, you could also pop in at the Worship Video Section and have a mini- worship session.
